Er wurde sowohl als Mitglied der Rockband Genesis als auch als Solokünstler bekannt, gehört mit über 150 Millionen verkauften Tonträgern (plus 150 Millionen mit Genesis) zu den weltweit erfolgreichsten Musikern der Branche und belegt Platz 26 der Billboard Hot 100 All-Time Top Artists. 2016 veröffentlichte die Redaktion des Rolling Stone eine Liste der „100 größten Schlagzeuger aller Zeiten“, auf der er den 43.
